Lansdowne Road one-way eastbound between Wellesley Road and Walpole Road
Croydon Council is proposing to change Lansdowne Road to one-way eastbound between Wellesley Road and Walpole Road. This will allow the southern footway on Lansdowne Road to be widened for a new pedestrian crossing on Wellesley Road.
Why are we doing this?
This change is needed because the council is installing a new accessible street level signalised toucan crossing (a type of pedestrian crossing designed for both pedestrians and cyclists, allowing them to cross the road at the same time) across Wellesley Road at the junction with Lansdowne Road. This will replace the existing pedestrian subway and will improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists travelling to Croydon town centre.
Lansdowne Road is currently one-way eastbound between Walpole Road and Dingwall Road. Extending the one-way from Wellesley Road will allow us to build the new crossing over the southbound traffic lanes on Wellesley Road. The westbound traffic lane on Lansdowne Road would need to be removed to extend the southern footway to accommodate the crossing. This will improve the space for pedestrians and the cycling route from East Croydon station.
Will all traffic leaving Walpole Road have to turn right?
Only cyclists will be permitted to turn left out of Walpole Road. Motorised vehicles will have to turn right towards Dingwall Road and road signs and road markings will be installed to support this. In the coming months, there will be another statutory consultation on changes to the Lansdowne Road / Dingwall Road roundabout which would reduce the journey times for vehicles requiring access to Wellesley Road.
Motorised vehicles will still be able to turn right from Lansdowne Road into Walpole Road.
How will the one-way be enforced?
This will be enforced by Croydon Council.
